The lunatic

Totaly out of his freaking mind… or is his mind simply outside our reality

In every country and in every age there have been those who were not able to deal with the real world or at least with what everyone else said was real. The role of the lunatic has traditionally been to be outcast. Some cultures listened to them but most modern cultures lock them away. In any case the lunatic is somehow connected with reality in a way different from ordinary people. If the world was a square to a normal person then the lunatic sees it as a trapezoid. This prevents him from functioning in the normal world but gives him insight to truths beyond normal people. The lunatic is the embodiment of insanity and as a result any person who channels this avatar must be out of their mind. The GM is free to decide what constitutes being insane but it is intended for NPC characters only. Their ranks are littered with mages and avatars who came to close to the truth as well as those driven mad by experiences their mind cannot quite wrap itself around. Some are conspiracy nuts, others violent criminals, and others just scream about things that done make any sense. A fair share are in nuthouses but many still walk the streets.

Current Godhead:
Vince Feltin was at some point a well-respected mathematician, but dealing with infinity and all that goodness eventually landed him in the loony bin. Despite the best efforts of doctors, nurses, family and friends he would not give up mathematics. He would spend every day writing numbers, equations, charts and the like. Attempts to remove papers and writing instruments resulted in a cell covered with equations written in his own blood. This resulted in him spending several years tied down. This hardly slowed him down, he simply learned to do everything in his head. Anyway after several years of being tied down mumbling to himself his eyes lit up and the words “Its all a lie” could be heard throughout the asylum. In his mind he had proven that which drove him insane, the universe is not real. In his mind he had conclusively and absolutely proven that all that is, is not. As self-preservation reflex the universe ascended him to godhood in an attempt to nullify the situation. It is possible that if the universe should ever allow him to un-ascend the universe would simply go away.

Taboos:
The lunatic can never say something that just makes sense to those who listen. He can speak in random words, cryptic messages or in some form of symbolism. Usually his words and actions seem random and demonstrate the terror and confusion he feels. In addition the lunatic can never display a solid grip on the “real world” for more than a few seconds. His thoughts drift in and out and as such he can seldom maintain a stream of though for more than a short while.

Symbols:
The mad hatter, deformed faces filled with insane smiles or looks of utter terror.

Channels:
1-50% –
At this level the lunatic may choose to flip flop any skill check, stat check or similar check which would somehow involve the lunatic being “cured” or otherwise made more sane. In addition drugs and other treatments, which might not normally require or allow a check of some type only work if the lunatic fails at a significant avatar check.

51-70%
While the lunatic dose not sees the world like a normal person his view is not without truth. A lunatic with this level of attachment is frequently hallucinating, ranting, or singing seemingly random things. Upon a successful avatar check the lunatic starts spouting what seems to be random stuff. However his words are actually information that is relevant to someone in earshot of him. If he is alone then the lunatic simply says truths to himself. In most cases the words are cryptic, symbolic, or at least vague. In some cases the information can be in the form of pictures he painted, tunes played, or even numbers. The form of information depends on the lunatic as well as on the information.

71-90%
At this level the lunatic starts becoming a serious problem to those around him. Any time the lunatic talks directly to someone (dead or alive, animal or human) he must make an avatar check. If he rolls under his skill but over the soul of the person he is talking to the person starts to see the world how the lunatic dose. This mechanically turns into a stress check determined by the ones die on the roll. The GM determines what stress gage is most relevant to the effect.
If the avatar rolls under his skill but under the person’s soul the person mealy has a glimpse of the lunatic’s world but it seems like a dream and only lasts a few seconds. In this case no mechanical effect occurs.

91+%
At this level the lunatic’s insanity starts to bleed into the world around him. At any time the lunatic may choose to make a major avatar check. If he succeeds he gets a minor charge. Even if the lunatic has a school of magic he may not use this charge on any spell, or ritual and he may never have more than one such charge at a time. In addition the lunatic has no conscious control over when or how the charge dissipates. The charge instead turns into a magical effect somewhat related to what was on the lunatic’s mind when the charge was created. If the lunatic rolls a 01 then he gets a significant charge/effect.

I must say I don’t see why this is necessary. You obviously have a certain character in mind, write him up as a duke, and go with that instead…

I just don’t like insane avatars. Adepts are insane, avatars can be more or less driven, but insane? No. The only insane avatar path i can readily visualize (except possibly the Fool, but she’s naive, not insane) is “The Village Idiot”, but those were mostly retarded, not insane, and quite often not even retarded but deaf. But I’m rambling…

I agree. This should have been a “Mageekian” once of those nutso types that don’t really follow of a school, but still fuck with reality.

However, I do like the other version of Insanity Incarnate posted to this site.
