Heroics

Games are very serious when the Statosphere is involved.

Right after the turn of the century, a pretty involved war started between the ascended Tragic Hero and a few lords of the Underground. Each one had a different view and for a while it looked like they would stalemate each other until the cosmic reboot, but the stalemate has been broken, and one possible idea is gaining steam at an alarming rate. Between the different struggles — overt, covert, and symbolic — with supporters of the Super Hero, Anti-Hero, and Unlikely Hero, they effectively balanced each other out. Observe:

The Super Hero has great power (which people like) but great responsibility (which people are less likely to be interested in, equating responsibility with blame).

The Anti-Hero gets the job done, but has many unsavory qualities that a surprisingly large amount of people wouldn’t want to emulate or condone. Surprising to most dukes, anyway.

Finally, the Unlikely Hero lets people see themselves in positions of accomplishment, but like the name says, it’s unlikely and people are less willing to put the emphasis behind it.

With the different qualities balanced like that and nobody able to get ahead, a maverick idea man has dodged between all three and emerged in the running, pushing The Ordinary Man Who Does Extraordinary Things. Marc Laidlaw is going to drag the Tragic Hero back to earth and stick Gordon Freeman in that Clergy Seat.

There’s probably one duke usurping all of these aspects in an attempt to ascend as the Protagonist.
