Nobody

Nobody cares. Nobody could do that. Nobody thinks that.

Nobody

A popular phrase to throw around nowadays, is that “Nobody cares” or “Nobody loves you” or “Nobody likes (insert hobby here)”, or most popularly, “Nobody can do that.” All that negativity can pool around a certain version of that phrase. The more it’s said, the more it can gain power.

Something can be born from this negativity. A Nobody can be called into existence; a creature which can take any form suited to proving that statement wrong and reversing the negativity. A lonely schoolgirl who hears “Nobody loves you” too much can get one of these attached to her. A task heralded as impossible by enough people can have a Nobody created to complete it.

This seems harmless in itself, in most situations, anyway. It usually is. The problems start when someone tries to get in the way of it fulfilling its goal. One of the cruel children who mock the lonely girl after she receives a playmate inside her head, someone who seems so real but can be seen only by her… may end up as lonely as she once was.

A Nobody does not retaliate directly, or even knowingly, in most cases. But unnatural phenomena tend to pool around it in the air, and strike at those who impede its goal. The pretty, popular girl who teases the lonely girl will find a wound inflicted on her face, not threatening her life but scarring her forever and throwing all her popularity out the window. A very unpopular singer may find a rabid, vocal fan whose very presence may bring them more fans, reversing the statement of “Nobody likes her.” And people who bash that singer may find themselves missing from time for several hours, or overcome by a noxious stench, cutting off their rant against her.

There’s no known way to eliminate a Nobody, or even spot one for sure. But the potential for big trouble always hangs around one, and the target of one.

Note that this idea is entirely language-dependent. Take, for example, “Nobody loves you”. English uses a non-existant entity as the subject of the sentence; to express the same idea Arabic negates the sentence “somebody loves you”, Hebrew uses a sentence that can be literally translated “Not even one person loves you”.

This isn’t necessarily a problem as long as you aren’t translating things or planning to use the idea in a universal context, but you should be aware that you are enhancing a linguistic construct with a somewhat shaky metaphorical basis.

I see no reason that it still doesn’t work. Either it’s more of a local supernatural entity (not too unlikely), a variation or sub-breed of some kind of more common supernatural (i.e. a revenant of someone who accomplished absolutely nothing, was unloved, forgotten, etc. like someone unexceptional who died in a coma from neglect), etc. Also, the basic idea is the same across cultures: There is not any person that does X. So this entity takes the place of the person that can do what no person does.
