Route 666 campaign

Time to roll on out to the old 66.6, kick ass for the lord and put down the very devil himself – Road trip !!!

…..”This just in, Father Howard Avery, Roman Catholic priest sensationally accused of the sexual and physical abuse of children over his thirteen year tenure at St Marks catholic school has been shot dead in what can only be described as an execution type killing. Father Avery under police escort at the time, leaving Rhode Island court house during preliminary hearings.

Police were unable to apprehend the murderer at the scene due to the necessity to control a large crowd of enraged supporters. Support for Father Avery has been overwhelming since the first accusations were made, despite a mounting degree of witness testimonies and evidence against him.

His murderer, described as a caucasian male in his early twenties is still at large. We will bring you more on this story as it breaks” …..

————–

Father Avery was the perverse Godwalker of the Betrayer archetype, who’s steady and prolonged history of abuse and betrayal was beginning to unravel. His death at the hands of one of his early victims has caused a vacancy and as his heirs mobilise to inherit his title, one had been planning for the event for years – Marc Benedict

Benedict used his influence to form a new age Christian religious commune during the 80’s. Promoting spiritual growth, brotherly love and a militant stance toward diabolism, he would regularly “have his way” with the married females under the noses of their spouses. Anyone considered useless, particularly gullible or suspicious would be given a task to prove their devotion (usually ending in a particularly gruesome betrayal). His unfortunate but susceptible followers would do anything for him, convinced he was the new messiah whose purpose on earth was to destroy the Antichrist at the appointed hour. As time went on they began subsuming or attacking other groups of “non-believers” – who had fallen or refused to accept the “true way”.

Things came to a head and Benedict was betrayed in turn by one of his followers, who, in a supreme act of willpower, turned against him (Breaking Benedict’s taboo and temporarily weakening him). A combined FBI and ATF raid led to his incarceration with many of his followers for numerous firearms offences.

Benedict didn’t let him stop plotting however. In prison Benedict’s lawyer acted as a courier, delivering sealed instructions to his remaining faithful.

“The time of the Antichrist is coming brothers and sisters and I shall drive out the devils son, and cast him back down to that fiery pit. God himself has visited me and I know what must be done; gather up his sign my children and hide them away until the time we may use them to draw him out and destroy him”.

Ever wonder why signs inscribed 666 keep disappearing?

Meanwhile Benedict thrived in prison – a trustee and a fixer, the snitch no-one suspected, he would rat out his friends to the guards or to other cellmates; friendly to everyone, he kept the whole pen jumping at each others throats.

Once made aware of Avery’s death, Benedict arranges a place on the next chain gang. Once in the desert he murders his captors and then his fellow prisoners – despite his assurances he would free them. He has escaped and his call has gone out and his foolish acolytes are abandoning the false lives and answering the call.

On the semi-defunct route 666 (now renamed route 491 but still forever the devils highway) at some significant centre point of the four states it traverses, Hundreds of Stolen 666 road/street signs are being erected and arranged in a suitably occult pattern.

It is already taking effect; the road seems lonelier and more otherworldly then ever. Time and space are playing funny tricks with people. Deadly once again, the road is swallowing people up. Familiar apparitions recounted in local myth have returned – the mad trucker and his flaming truck, the demon dogs, the frail lost phantom girl in the long nightgown and the terrifying Skinwalkers.

Benedict’s planned ritual shall be triggered by anointing his followers and the symbolic “sacrifice” of one of his follower’s sons (like Moses he is supposed to cast aside the child to sacrifice a lamb).

In truth the child is actually Benedict’s (his father doesn’t know) and will actually be sacrificed (…”betrayal of the son, betrayal of the “father, amen”…). The “holy water” with which Benedict will anoint his followers is in fact a cocktail of deadly snake neurotoxins that will kill them in an excruciating manner (murdering his flock).

The ritual is thick with symbolism and the lengths Benedict is willing to go to, to become a God.

Who can possibly stop such a foul and evil plot? – The players hopefully.

Benedict is difficult to dispose of – his channel makes him appear innocent and he is surrounded by fanatical, if deluded followers. The key to beating him is to “work on” one of his followers until they see him for what he is and do the deed for them or cause him to break his taboo, weakening him. Other possibilities include sabotaging the ritual, exposing the man or Channelling the messenger, delivering the faithful a truth they cannot deny.

(any input greatly appreciated).

Did you ever get this campaign going? I’d like to use it or something like it for my next few sessions.
