The Self-made Man

A path of independency and willpower, a road to loneliness and cruelty.

Attributes: The Self-made Man embraces the capitalistic businessman image; you don’t have to be born rich to be rich, all you need is an idea and the will to make profit with it. The avatars of Self-made Man tend to come from poor families but they all managed to change their luck sometime along the first steps on the path. They are born to win against all odds.
This archetype’s power is based on luck, greed and solitude, but not in a rootless kind of solitude. The Self-made Man is like a great old oak, standing alone on a windy hill for centuries. There is only one thing that the archetype depends on: the system of currency. One could say that if the oak dies, there will be a treasure hidden under it’s roots.

Taboos: However difficult the situation, the Self-made Man will never accept help of any kind. He will survive on his own, the way he has always survived. Neither will he help others out of compassion, for there is no room for that in a dog-eat-dog world.
Self-made Man cannot accept gifts or anything else that is not “earned”. Also, his taboo prevents him from ever forming a family as the gender roles force him to both help and be helped. Self-made Man lives a lonely exsistance.
Note: It is not against his taboo to buy for assistance. So he has to *pay* for everything. Basically he could hire anyone to build him a mansion, do his cooking or he could marry a hooker if he bought her for a lifetime.
Note: A kind of taboo, too, is the foolish use of the channels in which the odds are actually turned against the channeler.

Symbols: An oak with many branches on a wind-blown hill appears to every avatar’s dreams. Also, any symbol that helps the Self-made Man remember his roots will do. Or something that symbolizes the beginning of his accumulated wealth (like a lucky coin, or a photocopy of the lottery ticket that won)

Channels:
1%-50%: Once a week the self made man can turn the odds of a single roll, or say, a gambling situation, upside down. This works well at the horse tracks or football matches; just pick the horse or the team that has been losing and it will probably win this time. Thoughtless Self Mades work against their “hunch” and lose after betting on the better team. Same goes with the russian roulette: Normally it is one bullet in the barrel of six, but if this power is applied it will be solved as 11:12, not exactly a success unless trying to lose…

Ex. Mr Agrippa the Self Made Man needs to make firearms roll to shoot an intruder in his mansion. His skill is normally 30%, but because he desides to change the odds the skill would be 70%(!).

51%-70%: The Self-made Man mystically vanishes from all the records in the world. Somehow this will never cause any fuss, and yes, the mail still finds it’s way there. Oddly enough this doesn’t raise any questions, as if no one would care less. This means that he will be free of taxes, and he will be really hard to track.

71%-90%: The channel is so strong, that it starts to affect peoples minds. It is impossible to remember any details of a Self-made Man without his aproval. An enemy forgets that he exists, so does anyone else he doesn’t want to be aware of him. This doesn’t affect situations in which the avatar is present: the enemy will remember him instantly he sees him, even seeing a henchman of his is enough.
Also, if the channel is used in a situation where the enemy is afraid for his life (wearing kevlar etc.), it will not remove the fear. Just the reason disappears. The guy won’t probably crawl out of his bunker and start picking flowers.

91%+: Legacy. This is as good as it gets. The self made man knows the exact date of his natural death (which for some reason tends to be quite old for these avatars, usually 110+, even 140!). He feels a lumbago every time that his life is threatened to end shorter and he can use his Avatar: Self Made Man skill at the place of any skill roll that will save his life.
Furthermore when there is only a year to passing away roll the avatar skill: On a success the avatar finds a true love, or a heir or a good business to donate his wealth. This will make the last year a heaven for the Self-made Man, and it won’t break his taboo. On a failure he dies alone, and forgotten. On a fumble he comes back as a wicked demon with an obsession to his money!

The the higher channels seem a bit overpowered. At the very least make 51-70 a temporary and/or require a roll.
    Otherwise good

Now, this is a good idea poorly made. I mean, two of the channels deal with disappearing, not sucess in business, the very concept that you’re born to win would suit better as an archetype called “The Golden Child”, so the first channel should go as well and the last channel… it’s way to powerful and totally against the basic concept of the entire game -he’s basically immortal, especially if the avatar skill is his obsession – that people matters and nothing is certain.

No. Scrap the luck and destiny from the basic concept, replace with hard work (every self-employed person I know works ridiculously long hours) and a nose for business. Add some tension between honest and dishonest self made men. And rewrite the channels from scratch.

I sound harsh, and this is your first post, so I should be nicer, but this should be sent back to the drawing board. The fundamental concept is good and solid, and it deserves a rework.

Start thinking a bit about some characters in history you think would have been SMM. Or even people around you, in your neighbourhood. Read up on some of the (company-founded to be sure) “myths” surrounding Ingvar Kamprad for instance, there should be inspiration enough there.

    Hows abouts…

51% – 70%: The SMM gets knocked down, but he gets up again, you ain’t never going to keep him down.

On a successful Avatar: The Self Made Man roll, the avatar can ‘pick himself up and get back on his feet’ in a way appropriate to the given situation.
So if the Avatar’s business goes under due to bad luck or mismanagement, the Avatar will be able to get a loan or a distant aunt will die and leave him a sizable inheritance which he must use to restart his business or break taboo.
Or if the Avatar gets literally knocked down in a fist fight, he will have enough time to get back to his feet no matter how viscious and no holds bar the fight.

I am happy to hear critisism, and I agree with Mattias, now that I readed it again.
Actually, I started on the wrong foot with the SMM. A high level SMM was/is used as one of the ultimate bad-asses in my campaign, and I sort of needed him to be virtually un trackable.
So it was written in a dumb way: this guy needs to be able to do this and this, so I just put them to his hmm… channels… yeah he’s an avatar of… I’ll name it later… GO GET THEM!

Weell, I’m totally for the secret method of GM-ing by making it all up as you go along!-)
